Code + Pranks, an interview with Morgan
Who are you?
What do you do at Match?
Code and pranks
What’s the best prank you’ve pulled so far?
I turned my manager’s desk into a fish bowl for his birthday. Had aquarium rocks on the ground, blue cellophane around it, even a balloon octopus
I remember that! Mac or PC?
Mac for everything but gaming
What’s better, board games or video games?
Aww, do I have to choose? I love them both! Probably board games, though, since it’s a great way to get a bunch of friends together
Favorite board game?
It’s like a combination of Clue and Pictionary. One person is a ghost trying to lead the other players to solve the mystery of their murder using obscure “visions” in the form of illustrated cards
What tech are you geeking out on right now?
Cool! So what’s good about being a Software Engineer at Match?
There is a lot of flexibility to choose what you want to work on. Things move fast, but it means there’s a lot of variety and different things to work on and improve on.
Plus, it’s pretty awesome to be able to at the end of the feature know it’s going out to all of our users to improve their ability to connect with one another.
Favorite Match perk?
So many flavors of La Croix
Best company party?
2017 Holiday Party, they really went all out with the club theme and it was really a great time!
I was a little skeptical of the theme because I was looking forward to the usual formal attire, but it ended up being really fun to choose an outfit that was pretty out there
Dream vacation spot?
I definitely want to go to Japan sometime soon, they have some of the most beautiful mountains in the world from what I hear. I really want to go snowboard Hokkaido
Any advice for developers just getting started with React?
Focus on learning the patterns, not just the syntax. It’s all based on functional programming principles, which is why it works so well, but you can still make a real mess with React if you aren’t familiar with the core principles
How are you feeling about opening for Kyle Matthews, inventor of Gatsby, at the Match technology presents meetup in Dallas?
Nervous, excited! Definitely a big name to go before, but it’s exciting to have the chance to!
